Formulating strategies to reduce fossil fuel dependency by 50%
Nepal has experienced a burgeoning trend in the consumption of fossil fuel which is highly stressful to the economy and the environment. However, Nepal has immense potentiality to harness renewable clean energy sources such as hydropower, solar, micro-hydro and bio-gas. The country is endowed with approximately 42,000 MW of economically viable hydropower potential but thus far Nepal has only realized less than 2% of that potential. These renewable energy sources, if capitalized in proper way, can contribute to country's economic growth, poverty reduction and environment conservation. This unique position of Nepal therefore demands the opportunity to set a target of enhancing use of renewable energy technologies to reduce fossil fuel use.
Winrock International Nepal is working in collaboration with the Ministry of Environment to access and analyze the areas and opportunities and preparation of comprehensive strategies for reduction of fossil fuel use. Preparation of such strategy will be the first step towards achieving 50% reduction of fossil fuel in long run. This initiative is being supported by The Rockefeller Brothers Fund.
The strategy paper will be pivotal as it will be a guiding document for the government and the development agencies to realize the 50% reduction of fossil fuel use in Nepal.
